Congrats To The NY Giants

One of the most improbable post-season runs I can recall concluded with a defeat of the perfect 18-0 New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII.  The defense was again spectacular, but the offense really carried the day with that late 4th-quarter drive that began with only 2:35 on the game clock.
 Perfection is so unattainable…

Not Many People Would Have Put The New York Giants In The Super Bowl…

…but remarkably, they go through Dallas and Green Bay, the two best regular-season NFC teams, on the road, and they earned it, to say the least.  Can they beat New England and complete the most improbable post-season run ever?  I doubt it…but I wouldn’t have given them a chance today, either.  Nice win, and nice […]

Three Big Numbers

#1.  900 - as in 900 wins.
#2.  10 - as in 10th-ranked Texas A&M.
#3.  3 (appropriately enough) - as in, three straight victories for Texas Tech over Texas A&M, all three when the Aggies were ranked in the top ten nationally, to give Bobby Knight his 900th career victory.
Awesome!…

The Drive Of The Year?

Regardless of what happens in today’s NFC Divisional playoff game, the Dallas Cowboys just laid one of the most impressive drives in NFL history on the New York Giants.  20 plays, 90 yards, 10:28 off the clock…that’s nothing short of unbelievable…every coach’s dream, and something to warm the heart of this Cowboys fan…(and I’m no […]

Happy New Year!

And go Red Raiders…I have a number of resolutions this year, but they are all of a personal nature, as you might expect, and thus, while of intense interest to me, they would be of little moment to you.
I hope you are enjoying your day off, and if you have nothing to do for the […]

Good News So Far For Longhorn Fans…

…as Texas has a 28-10 halftime lead over Arizona State in a Holiday Bowl that the Texas  coaches have taken very seriously indeed.  Horrible news today, though, with the murder of Benazir Bhutto.  I actually got a little teary-eyed when I saw the headline, as this served as a blunt reminder of just how brutal […]

Field Of Apologies

Huckabee apologizes to Romney for attacking his Mormonism…
Hillary apologizes to Obama for making his drug-using early life an issue (and forces out the advisor who brought it up)…
…and Major League Baseball should apologize to everyone in the country for the sham that their lax enforcement of drug policy has turned their record books into.  Basically, […]

Ahh, Sweet Nostalgia!

One of the great moments of my life was seeing my favorite band U2 (sorry, Stones, you’re a strong number 2, but still number 2) on the 4th show of the Joshua Tree tour in Houston on April 7, 1987 (you can see the setlist here).  What I remember more than anything was the total familiarity […]

The Most Improbable Season

I don’t know what this means for my beloved Red Raiders and their shot at the New Year’s Day Gator Bowl, but #1 Missouri is in danger of falling, and #2 West Virginia is gone.  Both teams had merely to win to make the BCS Title Game, but merely winning has been almost impossibly difficult […]

I Would Be Remiss…

…if I didn’t take note of the fact that my Red Raiders, who have never beat a top 5 team, if memory serves me, are up 27-10 over #4 Oklahoma at the half.  Tech is notoriously awful against the run, so it’s not over yet by a long shot…but I give us a 60% chance […]

Went And Saw American Gangster Tonight…

…and what do you think happened?  Before the opening scene even got underway, the movie stopped.  Technical problems, slight delay, no problem…only when the movie started back, they didn’t start from the beginning!
Well, I’m a bit of a movie snob, and I can’t stand stuff like that (particularly after paying $9.75 for the ticket and […]

The Dream Is Over…

Well, my post below on Stephen Colbert generated 64 comments so far, the most in quite some time (though many were far, far afield), so I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings - but say bye to Candidate Colbert:
ABC News’ Jake Tapper Reports: The presidential candidacy of comedian Stephen Colbert seemed to come […]

File Under “Damning With Faint Praise”

How popular a candidate is Stephen Colbert? So popular he beats…Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich.
*Cough*…[sound of crickets chirping]…
Ummm, okay…but my beagle beats Paul and Kucinich! By double digits, even…I mean, come on, I like Rasmussen and all, but is this news?
Wow…

So, I Missed All Of The College Football This Saturday…

…on my little trip, although I did get home in time to watch the second half of my Red Raiders, who are well in control over SMU 42-9 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th. So, Texas was unimpressive, Oklahoma rolled, and…Appalachian State beat #5 Michigan 34-32 at the Big House.
WHAAAAAA….?
Jeez, you miss […]

Lyrics That Resonate

Okay, this has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the song that popped into my head while I just took a shower, but there are few lyrics in the history of rock with this much mystique and opacity that suggest specificity in so many diverse minds - oh, heck, read the […]

No, Not Another Stalin Post…

…but the subject is evil enough for me.  Michael Vick has thrown away his multi-million dollar football career and a life of unbelievable luxury because he apparently likes to kill dogs:
More than football, Michael Vick’s freedom is the question now.
With three associates prepared to testify that he brutally executed dogs and bankrolled gambling, the NFL […]

For The Superstitious Among You…

…who subscribe to the ‘bad news comes in threes’ theory, here’s something to chew on: three quite accomplished people in vastly different fields, dead within 24 hours of each other: Tom Snyder, Bill Walsh, and Ingmar Bergman…
I sincerely hope and pray that bad news does not come in fours, in this case, as we also […]

Some Good News For Iraq, From An Unlikely Source

It may not mean much to Americans, but never underestimate the power of soccer to uplift a country.  Iraq is now the proud Asian Football Cup champion for the first time ever:
A thumping header by Iraq’s Younis Mahmoud Khalaf in Jakarta, Indonesia, set off blasts of jubilant gunfire Sunday nearly 5,000 miles away in Baghdad, […]

The Simpsons Movie - A Quick Review

Just went to the midnight showing, stupidly, on a work night, so I’ve got to make this quick and get to bed!
Good - not great. It’s funny, but it’s hard to sustain the laughs for the duration. There are moments in the latter parts of the movie, but the first 20 minutes or […]

I’m Plum Out Of Ideas At The Moment…

…(or is that plumb out of ideas? Either way looks wrong)…though I do know how the latest Harry Potter ends (the big secret is…well, hell, who cares?). There’s a Democratic debate tomorrow (yawn) that promises to be even more excruciating than normal because it has ‘real people’ asking questions submitted through YouTube (am I […]
