File this one under bottom story of the day:
Ralph Nader is launching a third-party campaign for president.
The consumer advocate made the announcement Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He says most Americans are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties, and that none of the presidential contenders are addressing ways to stem corporate crime and Pentagon waste and promote labor rights.
What a joke! Disenchanted with the candidates! Democrats are fighting one of the most hotly contested primaries in memory with record turnout almost everywhere for two heavyweight candidates, while Republicans, who might not be in love with their candidate, are rallying around McCain solidly.
Nader is a punchline that wasn’t funny the first time, and it’s getting more tiresome each go-round…

It will be good to have Ralph Nader in the race. He is the best person to educated the public about the ills of our system of government. To teach voters: how our nation really works and how it has wandered a long way from the expectations of our Founding Fathers.
In this 2008 election voters are much more troubled and interested by the way Washington does business. Raph Nader will not spoil this election, but will get the message out about what needs to happen and about how to do it. Mr Nader will bring voter pressure on the lobbing establishment so real change can happen for whomever is elected.
The larger voter mandate any canidate has the more change he or she can bring about.
No one believes Ralph will win or even get many votes, but if Ralph Nader is given a seat at the table he will educate voters like no other canidate.

Umm, hmmm…and why wasn’t he able to accomplish this the first two times? And what will be different this time?

Well, the GOP has Ron Paul and since Kucinich dropped out there has been a void on the Democrat’s side; enter Ralph Nader to balance the wacky Right with his position on the wacky Left.
Oh how I long for the days of Pat Paulson!

Who knows… perhaps we’ll get to see if there’s still any lingering anti-black sentiment on the political left. In principle, Nader might do even better than he did in 2000. If Hillary’s the nominee he might do even better, peeling off those who were put off by the back-room superdelegate deals…
He’s probably still hoping to break 5% — to get matching funds for the Green Party in 2012….

My guess is that Nader will be the contemporary equivalent of Harold Stassen — runs every election, gets a lot of free press, and achieves nothing –

If the networks felt no compunction about excluding Ron Paul from the candidate debates, what do you think the chances are that they will choose to exclude Nader from the presidential debates?
Not bloody likely, is my opinion (for, I think, obvious reasons). But I could yet be pleasantly surprised.
