The Race Is On

New Poll, Same Results

When the smoke clears from all the Fred Thompson hype and the anti-Rudy backlash over his position on abortion, it’s a tiny bit surprising to see that Giuliani is still the Republican front runner by a large margin. Rudy has 32 percent support in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, compared to 19 for McCain, 11 for Thompson, and embarrassing 9% support for Romney, tied with Newt Gingrich.

On the Democratic side, John Edwards runs an equally embarrassing 4th if Al Gore is included, well back of front runner Hillary with 32% support, followed by Obama at 23%. It’s still wide open, but none of the second tier candidates are making any move at all (though the Ron Paul juggernaut keeps rolling with 1% support!)…

This ABC poll is a randon national sample of *adults*??? It says so right in the intro paragraph. why even cite a poll of, not likely voters, not even registered voters, just *adults*? It’s completely meaningless. Here is a poll of likely voters, you know, people who are actually expected to vote:

    Rasmussen National GOP Primary

    Giuliani - 23%
    F Thompson - 17%
    Romney - 15%
    McCain 14%

Just a six point lead nationally for Rudy with rumors afloat of several organized anti-Rudy movements yet to come. Not to mention recent polls showing him as low as fifth place in Iowa http://www.pollster.com/blogs/poll_public_policy_polling_d_i.php. I think Rudy’s in serious trouble. If I’m wrong I’ll be the first one back here next Feb to say so. But the big ‘MO’ is certainly not on his side.

No, JB, the candidate questions were asked of only people who identified themselves as Republican or Lean Republican (or, on the opposite side, Democrat, or Lean Democrat). You’re mistaken on the methodology…

  3. 3 JB Says:

Sorry, my mistake. Still, is it not likely voters? If not then it’s utterly worthless.

  4. 4 Mark Says:

I didn’t see any language about likely voters. I’m sure they asked the question, but this link, at least, doesn’t appear to have done that breakdown. Still, I noted another poll taken in the same time frame that confirmed the margin for Rudy from USA Today/Gallup (I may put it up later)…
