I’ve been too busy (nothing fun, I assure you) to comment on the blog much over the last few days, but I didn’t want to let the passing of Boris Yeltsin go by unobserved. Yeltsin may not be the towering figure of his era that Reagan turned out to be, but compared to Putin, he’s a regular sweetheart. David Satter takes issue with that characterization here, but hey, I call it like I see it. Yeltsin did what he needed to do at the crucial moments to prevent the Communists from stopping the nascent democratic movement in its tracks.
That’s worth a lot, and if for no other reason, and out of sheer human respect, I wish him a peaceful sleep…

True enough, but of which Russian leader over the last 250 years couldn’t this have been said?
