Decision ‘08

The Aftermath

Barbara Boxer: Yearly Jackass Contender

What the hell is going on here? Boxer to Condi:

Rice appeared before the Senate in defense of President Bush’s tactical change in Iraq, and quickly encountered Boxer.

“Who pays the price? I’m not going to pay a personal price,” Boxer said. “My kids are too old, and my grandchild is too young.”

Then, to Rice: “You’re not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with an immediate family.”

Breathtaking.

Simply breathtaking.

We scarcely know where to begin.

The junior senator from California apparently believes that an accomplished, seasoned diplomat, a renowned scholar and an adviser to two presidents like Condoleezza Rice is not fully qualified to make policy at the highest levels of the American government because she is a single, childless woman.

It’s hard to imagine the firestorm that similar comments would have ignited, coming from a Republican to a Democrat, or from a man to a woman, in the United States Senate. (Surely the Associated Press would have put the observation a bit higher than the 18th paragraph of a routine dispatch from Washington.)

But put that aside.

The vapidity - the sheer mindlessness - of Sen. Boxer’s assertion makes it clear that the next two years are going to be a time of bitterness and rancor, marked by pettiness of spirit and political self-indulgence of a sort not seen in America for a very long time.

Unbelievable…nice to know the grownups are back in charge, isn’t it?…

This is what happens when we annoint the Cindy Sheehans of the world “absolute moral authority” because they have lost a child in the war. My husband and I don’t have children, but he served in the Navy for 5 years in the 80’s. So is he entitled to an opinion having been in the services or not because he wouldn’t be putting his own off-spring into harms way?
Someone should tell Ms. Boxer that we have a VOLUNTEER army - no one has to go to Iraq or anywhere else if they don’t want to.
It’s like some kind of 60’s throwback to Vietnam - where we all know leftie minds are permanently stuck anyway.

  2. 2 Gilbert Brahms Says:

Perhaps this story hasn’t got more attention because the fact that Boxer is an hysterical nitwit has long ceased to be news to anybody.

  3. 3 Sean P Says:

Mark: Pelosi didn’t say the grownups would be in charge, she said the CHILDREN would be in charge. Consider this a promise kept.

  4. 4 Mark Says:

Then I stand corrected: she has quite literally kept her word…

  5. 5 Aaron Says:

Gilbert, I won’t dispute that Babs is nitwit, but that doesn’t stop the media from crucifying nitwits on the right — Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, for instance — when they say idiotic things.

And they’re just private citizens, not senators who can legitimately claim to represent the largest constituency in the country.

  6. 6 cutter Says:

What barbara boxer said was fact, As a matter of fact I bet Condoleezza Rice never put her life on the line to fight a war that she had no choice in. Oh and hey if everyone is so for this war then go join, no ones stopping you, but don’t commit our men and women so freely if your not willing to do the same.

  7. 7 Mark Says:

Wow, cutter, you’ve discovered the chickenhawk argument - what are you, some sort of spaceman genius? Guess what, though, we have a volunteer army.  Sorry you didn’t know that…

  8. 8 Roxanne Says:

Not put her life on the line? You Freakin idiot - she lives and works in Washington DC.

And since when do you need to strap on a jock strap and an M-17 to be considered intelligent enough to serve our nation. Go play with your gun and leave the debate to the adults.

  9. 9 Romeo Bravo Says:

    Cutter:

If your logic holds, everyone who is for peace should join the Peace Corp? So where did you serve? What type of selfless sacrifice have you made for world peace? My guess, you are just a bag of hot air, much like Barbara Boxer. And you are twice as smart as her. Her smarts are zero. You do the math…
