Give This One To The Nutroots®

Well, after 2006, those of us on the opposite side of the fence from the ‘progressives’ have lost the ability to say they are 0-for-whatever, and yesterday, they added another victory.  Ciro Rodriguez, an old DKos favorite, pulled a stunning upset and beat Henry Bonilla in a runoff in my own great state of Texas:

Democratic former Rep. Ciro D. Rodriguez upset Republican Rep. Henry Bonilla in a House runoff election Tuesday in southwestern Texas’ 23rd District, pushing the Democrats’ net gain to 30 House seats and concluding Campaign 2006 with one final stunning come-from-behind victory for the new House majority party.

I’m always one of the first to pile on to DKos, MyDD, firedoglake, etc., so I’ll just try to take the high road here and say congratulations; it’s a huge upset and a big victory for their side…

  • In all fairness, I don’t think Ciro’s win had much to do with the big-name bloggers at all. Bonilla ran some nasty-nasty attack ads that badly backfired, and he’s seen as in the pockets of big business concerns down here – and in S.A. for that to count against you then you have to be in deep. But perhaps most telling of all – people feel he has become detached from his roots over his years in power. The scuttlebutt down here in S.A. was that he arranged himself a heavily Anglo area because he only wants to see other Hispanic faces when they are doing his yard. When the redistricting court re-drew the boundaries and brought heavily-Hispanic South Bexar back in, that was the death knell. Bonilla, to an extent, sank himself with complacency and false pride and handed Rodriguez the win.

And maybe its time to retire “nutroots”? Given that these “nuts” seem to be conseiderably smarter, and more in touch with America than your guys!

Yes Tano, you really are “conseiderably ” smarter. You might want to unpack the Hooked on Phonics tapes from the garage.

  • More extreme left-wingers in the US Congress than Republicans? I’ll believe that when I see it. Most of the freshman in next year’s congress got there by running to the right of the incumbents.

PS: Tano, you also shouldn’t have used that comma.

    ????

  • Bob Casey, Heath Schuler, Brad Ellsworth, just to name a few. It’s no secret that the Dems won by getting moderates-to-conservatives to run against GOP incumbents tainted by corruption and their association with the war in Iraq.

Bob Casey ran to the right of Rick Santorum?

    Comrades,

I dunno. Seems to me that giving credit to the Nutroots® for this victory is akin to congratulating the NSDAP for their taking control of the Reichstag. Certainly both groups share a common set of virtues. Or lack thereof.

    Welcommen der jahren 1939!

    Respects,

  • Tano, it will NEVER be time to retire the phrase Nutroots®!…

Bob Casey ran to the right of Rick Santorum?

Of course he did, and Brown ran to the right of DeWine and McCaskill ran to the right of Talent.

Some of the newly elected Democrats ran conservative campaigns in conservative districts, but not most of them. Most of the Democrats’ gains were in the Northeast and they didn’t run conservative campaigns.

    Aaron,

Ellsworth ran a defensive campaign. There was very little direction involved. Also, running to someone’s [either direction] doesn’t say a darn thing about how they’re likely to vote…
