End Of The Road For Hastings Appointment?

It looks that way; both Congressional Quarterly (via TPMmuckraker) and Fox News have stories suggesting that Alcee Hastings and Nancy Pelosi met today to close the door on his ill-starred bid to chair the House Intelligence Committee.  If so, then let me just say well done to Pelosi.  This was a big early test of her leadership, and it looks like she passed.

Regardless of your party affiliation, this was not the place to put a man with his integrity issues.  Now, I’d like to see the job go to Jane Harman, but greater than that was my desire to see it go to ANYONE but Hastings…

This meeting did not happen! Pelosi never considered giving the job to Hastings! It’s all a media lie. Good DAY sir!

(Walks off humming “The Girl From Impanema”…)

  • Greenwald already has a post up saying that the rejection of the Hastings bid proves that he never was considered…the cognitive dissonance is staggering!…

Peeeloshi has became the republicans best hope in 08. Keep her talking, especially when she responds to questions that were never ask. Today was a real comedy.

Why in the world does Greenwald expend his energy on this argument? The point is moot. Hastings was considered and rejected. You need only read the news of the last several weeks to find proof. Splitting hairs over how strong his candidacy was, how heavy or light the pressure from the Congressional Black Caucus, and how strongly Harman worked to undermine his bid is silly. That Pelosi found it necessary to meet with the man to explain he wouldn’t get the job says that he was considered (and ultimately found wanting).

  • Well, he expends energy on this argument because the alternative is to admit he’s wrong…
