The Aftermath

Syria’s Miscalculation

By trying to block the Hariri tribunal through its proxy Hezbollah, Syria has made a fundamental miscalculation that will cost it in two areas:

(1) It has strengthened the Lebanese democratic forces considerably.  March 14th was already stronger than March 8th, but it will be in an even stronger position now.  Nobody likes to be bullied, and the Lebanese are no different on that score.

(2) It has taken much of the momentum from the idea that we must involve Syria in Iraq (officially, that is - of course, they’ve already been allowing the free flow of terrorism for quite some time).  The Iraq Study Group may well recommend this, but it’s harder than ever to imagine Bush agreeing to such a prospect after the latest assassination…

One Response to “Syria’s Miscalculation”

  1. 1 PoliticalCritic Says:

Unfortunately, the West has miscalculated by not supporting the Lebanese government more, especially after the Hariri assassination. It was a weak government that is now considerably weaker. Syria, Iran, and Hezbollah all have influence…not to mention that the infrastructure of the country has been destroyed by Israel.
