What Liberal Media?: Part 82
The headline in the Washington Post: Democrats, On The Offensive, Could Gain Both Houses. And they very well could…yet the article presents no evidence that the Senate will swing the Democrats’ way, and the survey that provided the impetus for the article shows Republican gains in almost every category.
Some examples:
Bush job approval: 43%, up from 40 (Registered Voters)
Generic Likely Voter, Dem +6 (down from Dem +14)
Right Track/Wrong Track (RV): 39/59, up from 32/66
Who do you trust on Iraq (RV)? Dem 42, Rep 42, up from Dem 48, Rep 40
Party that best reflects your values (RV): Dems 48, Rep 44, up from Dems 53, Reps 37
And so on…now many of those numbers are still pretty dismal for Republicans, but clearly a more accurate, unbiased headline would be: Republicans Closing Gap As Election Nears…that’s the story the survey tells, anyway…
UPDATE 10:56 p.m.: AJ puts the exclamation point on the most jarring result of the survey: the mere 6% generic Dem advantage, as mentioned above, which has been in double-digits for months now…

[...] Hold off, Nancy, you’re not speaker until all the votes are counted. On the heels of the ABC News/Washington Post poll that showed a tightening race with the generic ballot at a mere +6 Dems (after months of double-digit leads for the Donkeys) comes the Pew Research Center with a generic Democratic edge of…4 (!!!) points… [...]
