Ann Richards, RIP

I wasn’t a fan, to be sure; her cornpone style is embarrassing to this Texan in the same way as Jim Hightower’s faux populism.  I think we’ve moved way beyond that Texas; it’s certainly not the state I see every day here in Austin (though I do see plenty of faux populism).  Nevertheless, she was a woman of considerable accomplishments, and I’m a firm believer in giving the recently deceased their due.

So here’s to you, Ann; hope you’re in a better place…

    even though it was an anti-bush statement-

    the ‘all hat, no cattle’ was a great line. Was it hers or simply an adaption of Texas-speak that she nationalized?

    Her other one was refering to W’s dad, about being “born with a silver foot in his mouth”…. yeah… wrong party, but good lady. We could use more like her these days.

    I hope W, or at least his dad, attends the funeral. Not becuase the potential for a Wellstone memorial moment would be ripe, but out of her importance to texas.

    At the least, a letter to a Texas paper, praising her as a person, is in order.
