I read that a few days back, and it’s excellent. I really do love my state, but I’m finding myself very frustrated. We’re far too reliant on the property tax, which has to be the most ridiculous and unjust kind of tax available; demanding cash for a nonliquid asset. But there doesn’t seem to be much of a push to do anything about that.
It’s now looking like one part of the governor’s recent tax hike proposal won’t go through, namely the sales tax. That’s nice, but until they do something to address the tax system as a whole as well as the ridiculously generous benefits offered to state workers, teachers and other public employees, none of it much matters.
The notion that New Jersey is a blue state through and through is overstated; big swaths of the state are suburban red, and we’ve had a pair of two-term Republican governors over the past 25 years. But the Democrats seem to have the upper hand now, and probably will until things really fall apart.
