Helen Thomas Slams (?) McCain

Helen Thomas, who might be likened to Phyllis Diller without the charm, has one of the oddest op-eds up that you’ll likely see for some time – unless you make a habit of reading Helen Thomas op-eds. Helen can think of nothing worse than an America led by twice-elected George Bush, so she says if you want more Bush, elect McCain – but I’m actually giving her argument more comprehensibility in summation than it deserves. Here’s a taste of the lovely prose that makes her such a respected Washington journalist (*cough, cough*):

With his “hail fellow well met” persona and tendency to jaw with the media and pundits in the back of the campaign bus, he has created the impression in some quarters that he is a “moderate.”

Forget it. His voting record speaks for itself.

McCain is working hard to prove his staunch conservative credentials as he woos the far right in his party.

If he wins the presidency, the country can expect a continuation of Bush’s aggressive foreign policy and ultra-right domestic programs.

God, I hope so…if McCain would endorse those sentiments, he’d be close to winning my vote…

Of course, in truth, Bush’s ‘ultra-right’ domestic programs include a budget-busting Medicare prescription drug benefit, a reasonable compromise on immigration, and numerous other center-right ideas that are hardly the stuff to make ditto-heads and Coulterites salivate. George W. Bush has certainly been no ‘winger’ – in this case, one must consider the source…

Yeah that was a pretty surreal column. “Hail fellow met well”?!!??! What does that even mean?

And Dems marching lockstep with this “John McCain is the 3rd/4th most conservative Republican in the Senate” meme are deluding themselves. The survey they are relying on has John McCain pegged to the right of Bill Frist, George Allen, Pat Roberts (!), Rick Santorum (!!), and Sam Brownback (!!!). In other words, its complete bunk.

Considering that for the past five years lefties have loved pointing to McCain as the essence of proper conservatism every time he criticized the president, I think they’re going to have a hard time convincing a majority he’s actually been a more avuncular version of Jesse Helms all along.

Oh, let’s just leave that crazy old batty Aunt in the attic – no need to dust off the cobwebs.

The Leftwing Extremists of course see everyone else as Rightwing Extremists. Not sure where I saw it but some joker in Amsterdam was complaining that the Netherlands had an extreme rightwing government. As Benino would say, I do not think that word means what you think it means.
