A Big Day For Bloggers…
…but whether it will be a good or bad one is still in the air. Tomorrow, HR 1606, the Online Freedom of Speech Act will be considered in the House. Mike Krempasky:
Here are the relevant points:
* HR 1606 is a simple bill that simply puts into law the existing status quo. It preserves the system under which we operated for the 2004 elections – WHEN THERE WAS NO CORRUPTION OR SCANDAL. It’s supported by bloggers left and right.
* HR 4900 (also known as the CDT proposal) is NOT an acceptable alternative to HR 1606. It’s attractive, and while complicated it has a lot to like – and we can look at it after we pass 1606 – but this is the bottom line: if HR 1606 is not passed TOMORROW, the FEC will issue regulations for politics on the internet.
* The reformers regulators merely want to delay the process while the Commission will be forced to issue regulations.
* This is a TINY, TINY law. It does NOT open up a gaping loophole – and you can support BCRA and still believe that this little tiny section of American politics ought to be free. (don’t trust me – ask FEC Chairman Michael Toner)
…[A]bout an hour ago – the Chairman of the FEC announced a one-week pause in the final vote on regulations TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO HR 1606 tomorrow. It couldn’t be more clear: pass HR 1606 or face regulations on the internet. Period.
Adam B. at the Daily Kos:
Moments ago, the FEC announced that it will delay its vote on the Internet rulemaking (from tomorrow, 3/16, until 3/23) so that the Commission can see what the House of Representatives does on the issue tomorrow. It’s up to you to convince Congress to stand up for H.R. 1606, which is scheduled for a vote tomorrow, and prevent the FEC from voting on new regulations which may change Internet political activity forever.
Everyone here — everyone — needs to to pick up the phone and make a call to protect free speech online. Our opponents are ruthless, and we need to tell both Democrats and Republicans to stand up to the “reformers” and stand up for H.R. 1606.
If you’re not a blogger, but just enjoy blogs, we could use your help too. The number for the Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121 – just call and ask for your Congressman, and tell them you support HR 1606, or follow the links from the House website.
Your favorite bloggers will be much beholden to you for your assistance…

I just emailed Ed Royce, my congressman and gave my endorsement to HR1606. Unfortunately, I do this quite often (most recently to endorse Shadegg for Majority Leader), which probably minimizes my effectiveness on each individual vote.
Many thanks, sir – I let my Congressman, Lamar Smith, know about my support earlier in the day…
Every little bit helps!
