The Race Is On

Tuesday Evening Quick Shots

Lots of stuff going on today…

As our friend Peter pointed out, a new Zogby poll shows that 72% of troops on the ground in Iraq say we should withdraw within a year. I merely take the opportunity to point out the financing of the poll - make of it what you will:

John Zogby, CEO of the polling company, said the poll was funded through Le Moyne College’s Center for Peace and Global Studies, which received money for the project from an anonymous, anti-war activist, but neither the activist nor the school had input on the content of the poll.

Bush’s personal numbers aren’t too hot at the moment, either, with the CBS News poll showing him at 34% - almost as low as Jimmy Carter in 1979

To continue my all-depressing look at things, we have the spectacle of the UN responding to the spread of the Darfur tragedy by - yes, you guessed it - doing nothing

On a lighter note (finally!), AJ has found a rare point of agreement with Richard Cohen…

Decent analysis of the Zogby poll over at NewsBusters. Might want to check it out.

Thanks for the link to the article in Stars and Stripes.

So “85 percent believe a major reason they were sent into war was to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the Sept. 11 attacks.”

That, among other things in the article, is very interesting. It’s too bad our men and women are dying over there, and most of them don’t even know why.

I’m not sure the poll needs any kind of partisan debunking from the Right. While making the stipulations that we should remain in force as long as is necessary, it’s plain that necessity will abate well within the year in question. Also the argument that our presence is provocative to the jihadis and their friends, while failing to negate the imperative of removing Saddam, is much more salient with an Iraqi sovereignty in place. That the troops on the ground would give a year as a general timeframe isn’t inappropriate or and indictment of the war at all.
