The Aftermath

Bode Miller: Crapping Out His Way

Here’s the craptacular Bode Miller, on his 0-for-5 Olympics:

“I just did it my way. I’m not a martyr, and I’m not a do-gooder. I just want to go out and rock. And man, I rocked here,” Miller said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press soon after he skidded off the slalom course in his fifth and final race, completing an 0-for-the-Olympics.

Yes, indeed - provided, of course, that ‘rocked’ means sucked.

If that’s the case, you rocked, all right…

I’m thinking about how Miller’s past performances have been argued as analogous to the that of the baseball home run hitter that either hits a home run or strikes out - it was said that Bode either won his events or blew out of them. Of course, that would be true only if he actually WON once or twice in his five events…

  3. 3 Dennis Says:

It sort of reminds me of the kind of comments you’d expect from a surly teenager who acts like he’s too cool for school. “I don’t care. The Olympics are all just a big popularity contest anyway…”

  4. 4 Gwedd Says:

    Comrades,

He is simply the product of the Olympics experience. His attitude, his demeanor, heck Bode himself is exactly the type of athlete/entertainer that the Olympics has been aiming for for quite some time.

The absolute marketing of everything and anything, the pure schlock and ticky-tack souveniers, the pandering media coverage, the over-priced ticketing and food concessions, the uncontrolled sponsorship marketing, advertising, and promotional gizmos have all led to this.

Bode is simply the human face of what the Olympics has finally become. A “who-cares-about-the-sports?” attitude that concentrates on only one thing: How much money can we make?

I haven’t watched much of the Olympics at all, because I cannot bear to watch what was once a great and proud tradition and organization turn into the cesspool of mediocrity that it has become. I’m surprised that the 5-ring flag symbol hasn’t been replaced with a “for sale” sign, since that’s the Olympic’s motto anyway.

    Respects,

    Gwedd

Bob Ryan, sports writer extraordinaire, sees something more insidious and uniquely American in the attitude shown by Bode Miller:

  6. 6 Mason Says:

Mark, (according to the Bode Miller lexicon) I have “rocked” my way almost all of the way through the Texas Tech undergraduate philosophy program.

  7. 7 Muffin the Cat Says:

Don’t we have more important issues in our lives to be concerned about? Some of the events are fun to watch (Hockey) but lets put this sports event in overall perspective. It has zero and I mean zero effect on my life. Similar to the Stuper Bowl.

  8. 8 Mark Says:

Mason, well said - by the same token, I really ‘rocked’ in my time at UT - but hey, you almost have that piece of paper, and that’s what counts!…

  9. 9 squidly Says:

Wonder if Nike will run the Bode Miller ads now…he he. And did you see that skank that BM was with in the bar. Bode is just one large , steaming t**d!!!
    see yahhhhh!!!!
