Alec Baldwin: A Study in Psychosis

What – and I do mean what – in the HELL is Alec Baldwin smoking? In a post that laughably asks what kind of civil suit Harry Whittington will file against Cheney(!!!!), Baldwin inflates Cheney’s one beer at lunch, five hours before the incident, into ‘a few beers’, then, bizarrely, asserts the following:

…[T]his is the guy that sicced Enron on Gray Davis and the state of California to embarrass Davis, trigger the recall and then watched Arnold Schwarzenegger become governor of California. (To this day, perhaps, still the low point in American political life.) Then Cheney covered it up.

Cheney’s the guy who told Libby to out Valerie Plame. The rumor I heard is that someone yelled, “Look out! Shooter!” and Cheney thought he said Scooter and fired in that general direction.

What the…? Sicced Enron on the State of California?…but that’s just a warm-up:

Cheney is a terrorist. He terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately. Who ever thought Harry Whittington would be the answer to America’s prayers. Finally, someone who might get that lying, thieving Cheney into a courtroom to answer some direct questions.

Ummmm…say, is Mr. Baldwin’s horse tranquilizer ready yet?…

Will, in fairness to Alec Baldwin, he actually says, “what kind of civil trial will we see, or not see, between Cheney and Whittington?” Of course, one could point we could just as easily say “what kind of mental institution will we see, or not see, Alec Baldwin confined to?” But I suppose pointing that out would be unsporting, so I won’t do it. (Oops, too late.)

One has to wonder, however: If Dick Cheney is so powerful, and so scheming, that he hatched a plot to use Enron to damage Gray Davis and install Gov. Schwarzenegger, what’s the point of trying to oppose Cheney at all? Clearly he must operate on some magical, omniscient level which mortals like Karl Rove can only dream about. Baldwin might as well move abroad like he threatened a long time ago, since there’s no political move the Democrats could think of that apparently Dick Cheney hasn’t already considered and countered.

On a completely unrelated note, although on a more Decision ‘08-related note, you might want to read this essay by Jay Cost decrying 2008 polls. He makes a few main points which I can’t quibble with, mainly that people aren’t giving much serious thought to 2008 yet, and there’s a lot of things that can happen between now and then that would change the dynamics. But he doesn’t address the more pressing issue, which is whether such early polls have any predictive value.

I have to go by memory here, but I’d wager they do. George W. Bush was already considered the frontrunner in this October 1998 BBC story. John Kerry was already considered a likely nominee in 2002, assuming Al Gore didn’t run. I think if you look back, you might see some early polls that were skewed by the presence of people who ultimately didn’t run, such as Gore in ‘04 or Powell in ‘96. But the indications for 2008 are that McCain and Hillary will probably run, and while I’m less sure about Giuliani, I’d guess he will too.

So I guess my conclusion is that while there are lots of reasons why the nomination of any of those three early leaders might go against conventional wisdom, I don’t think we should discount their early leads as something likely to go away upon further scrutiny. There will probably be boomlets around other candidates, but history shows the frontrunners usually stay that way.

So much for my coding skills: here’s the link to the Cost essay: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/Commentary/com-2_17_06_JC.html

And here’s the link to the BBC story from 1998: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/special_report/1998/09/98/us_midterms/203007.stm

  • Dennis, thanks for the tip – I saw the Cost article this morning, and thought about blogging it, but I got sidetracked…I’ll give it a second look…

    Comrades,

Interestingly enough, speaking of polls, the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) ran a reader’s poll yesterday (17 Feb) that listed 8 women considered as potential Presidential nominees for 2008. Among them were both Maine Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Hillary Clinton, and Condoleezza Rice. I can’t remember the other 4 off the top of my head.

Surprisingly, of more than 2,000 respondants, the largest total went to Rice, who narrowly edged out Hillary, followed by Collins. Statistically, Rice and Clinton were tied, but seeing how Maine is such a Blue state I was impressed with the results. Certainly it was not a scientific poll, inthat it was based upon results from folks who chose to participate, and no other data regarding them is available. Still and all, it must give the Dems some pause for concern to think that Clinton is tied with a Black Women Republican who has said she won’t be running….. stay tuned. Life is certainly interesting up here in the People’s Republic of Maine.

    Respects,

    Comrades,

Yeah… I meant to ask… exactly WHY is Citizen Baldwin still living in the US? I remember quite well his rantings and threats.. nay promes! to move abroad if W was elected president. I sent an email to his agent offering to help pay some of his moving costs, but never got a response.

    Respects,

Just ask his poor ex – wife (Kim Basinger) about Mr. Baldwin’s unhinged mental state these days. The details on their custody battle are quite revealing – and this is the same person who ranted and raved at a Dem political rally during the Clinton years, “let’s go burn Henry Hyde’s house down – right now!”

No wonder his career went into the tank – everyone knows what a horse’s a– he is to deal with (and this is Hollyweird, for goodness sake!).
