Yet Another NSA Poll

Aaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhh! It’s no wonder people can’t get the NSA story right, with the media and polling organizations concentrating on ‘wiretaps’. Still, here we go again, this time with CNN/USA Today/Gallup. The question was worded like this:

Do you think the Bush administration was right or wrong in wiretapping these conversations [telephone conversations between U.S. citizens living in the United States and suspected terrorists living in other countries, according to the previous question] without obtaining a court order?

The answer: 50% say A-OK, 46% say no way, Jose (or words to that effect)…

Mark – this ABC/WaPo poll was just released, and it appears to be well – balanced, at least with regards to the phrasing of questions:

  • Neat poll, dmac.

    My favorite question pair:

    20. Do you think that if Alito is confirmed to the court, he would vote to (overturn Roe versus Wade entirely); vote to (keep abortion legal but with greater restrictions); or vote to leave current abortion law as it is? (1/8/6)
    . 18% Overturn
    . 26% Greater Restrictions
. 38% Leave As It Is
    . 18% No Opinion
20a. (AMONG THOSE WHO GAVE AN ANSWER AT Q20) Is that what you would want him to do, or not?
    . 58% Yes
    . 39% No
    . 3% No Opinion

That’s a staggering endorsement (unfortunately) of the bob-and-weave approach to Roe questions. Most of those questioned have a reasonably strong opinion on what should be done about abortion law, and nearly 60% of those believe that Judge Alito agrees with them, despite the fact that likely fewer than 60% agree with any one of the three given options on what he might believe. In other words, by being vague, he’s convinced a larger number of people that he agrees with them than it would in fact be possible for anyone to agree with.
