Freebird???? Don’t tell me Johnny Van Zant has made some jackass comment like Mellencamp has a tendency to do.

    . . . or is this apolitical?

  2. 2 Dennis Says:

I still like “Jack & Diane,” but the rest of Mellencamp’s stuff feels a bit too self-conscious, like he took his press releases too seriously and thinks he always has to be the bard of the Midwest or something.

I was a big Asia fan as a kid, though now a lot of their stuff seems too dated for me. But “Heat of the Moment” still rocks.

(Incidentally, is there anything stranger than musical tastes? How come when I listen to some old favorites, I try to figure out what drugs I must have been on to have enjoyed them, while other songs still sound as awesome as the day I first heard them?)

Agree with your list except I still enjoy Mellencamp’s Big Daddy, and the Led Zeppelin percentage is more like 60%.

80’s through mid-90’s U2 is still high on the list. I’ve always loved Patti Smith’s music (just don’t listen to her ruminations on politics). Springsteen still rocks although I’ve always hated the song Born to Run. Oh, and The Clash, Talking Heads, and The Cure never get old.

Currently I’m loving The White Stripes and Moby (who is as insufferable as Patti Smith, btw).

No, no, Aaron, apolitical…On the opposite end of the spectrum, my current obscure favorite (at least for a 37-year-old like me) is The Arcade Fire - Funeral…

I will admit that Small Town has one line I like -

“Still hayseed enough to say look who’s in the big town”…

    dennis,
considering the drugs you took, it’s because every time you hear a song it’s the first time.
    :)

sounds like finding a george strait fan in this blog is next to impossible.

  7. 7 Mark Says:

louielouie, I like George okay; went and saw him live once, and consoled myself over losing my first girlfriend to the tune of his first Greatest Hits…

  8. 8 Peace Moonbeam Says:

For me: Anything by Tom Petty.

  9. 9 Mark Says:

I’ll agree on anything by Tom Petty past 1984…

  10. 10 louielouie Says:

    two rules mark.
#1 don’t console yourself using c&w music. it will only make you more depressed.
#2 if you wanted her back you should have played the record backwards. you know a c&w song played backwards gets your job back, your pickup truck back, your girlfriend back, and you sober-up.

  11. 11 Mark Says:

    NOW you tell me!…
