What Did James Risen Know, and When Did He Know It?

The MinuteMan makes his welcome return, and asks a reasonable question: if NY Times reporter James Risen has been knee deep in the CIA in preparation for his new book “State of War” (the same book the forced the Times, if we are to believe their own account, to unveil the NSA eavesdropping story) for the last couple of years:

…[I]s he also sitting on a Bob Woodward style revelation of his own? Did Mr. Risen actually get a leak from an Administration official linking Wilson’s wife to the CIA and the Wilson trip to Niger?

One might almost wonder why he didn’t – Bob Woodward received a leak, quite possibly from Richard Armitage at the State Department, when he wasn’t even looking for it.

Judy Miller got a leak from Lewis Libby, and perhaps others, although her memory was foggy.

Andrea Mitchell said, to her own eventual discomfiture, that among journalists who cover the intelligence community and were probing the Niger story, Ms. Wilson’s CIA connection was “widely known”. Surely Mr. Risen is a member of this club.

And over at the Times, Nick Kristof told his readers that “Mrs. Wilson’s intelligence connections became known a bit in Washington as she rose in the CIA and moved to State Department cover”.

Hey, that’s a pretty good question…why didn’t I think of it?

Answer: because I’m not the MinuteMan…welcome back, Tom…

  • Good job!

The NYT has become a parody of itself, all the print that’s fit to news. Here’s how it will look next week:

Could someone translate this from the orginal NYTimeses:

“….The White House has yet to show that national security was harmed by the report on electronic spying, which did not reveal the existence of such surveillance – only how it was being done in a way that seems outside the law….”

How exactly does one explain how something works without noting that it exists?

Or are they saying that their scoop wasn’t a scoop because someone else scooped them? (Which would be a scoop in itself).

  • Fred, the logic of that sentence IS rather tortured, isn’t it?…

Would like to comment on Mr. Risen’s article on electrocution of soldiers in Iraq. I worked as an electrician for KBR in 2005 in Mosul. How do I get in touch with him?
