In The Home Stretch Now…

Lieberman’s’ Courage Met With Scorn

How does a Democrat who dissents from the ‘progressive’ viewpoint on Iraq get treated? Let’s take a look:

Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) is troubled by Lieberman’s comments, Reid’s aides said. “I’ve talked to Senator Lieberman, and unfortunately he is at a different place on Iraq than the majority of the American people,” Reid said yesterday.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters this week that “I completely disagree” with Lieberman. She added: “I believe that we have a responsibility to speak out if we think that the course of action that our country is on is not making the American people safer, making our military stronger and making the region more stable.”

Liberal political groups, including Democracy for America and MoveOn.org, are considering ways to retaliate, including backing a challenge to Lieberman in next year’s Democratic primary. Former senator and Connecticut governor Lowell P. Weicker Jr., an opponent of the war, has vowed to run as an independent, absent a strong Democratic or Republican challenge to Lieberman.

In a piece entitled “Hanoi Joe’s Lonelyhearts Club”, Oliver ‘Like Gravy to Chicken Fried Steak’ Willis offers the following brilliant observation:

It’s time we excise backstabbers like this from our midst.

Hey, Oliver, should we kill him, or just rough him up a bit?

And how about more Harry Reid, via the only two-time Weekly Jackass Kos:Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), yesterday on the Bill Press Show:

“I’ve spoken to Joe Lieberman and he knows he’s out there alone. I mean, literally alone. Joe is a fine man, he has strong feelings, but he’s just alone. Even Republicans don’t agree with Joe.”

Oh, really, Harry? Which Republicans would that be? Chuck Hagel? Can you name a second?

Today’s Democratic leadership sickens and disgusts me…do Democrats really want to be known as the party of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Howard Dean? If so, 2006 is going to sadly disappoint you, and the Presidency will continue to elude you. More Democrats need to wake up; you don’t have to support the war, like Lieberman, but you can at least be honest in your opposition and quit slandering one of the few people willing to speak up against party orthodoxy…

Shows you what they know about courage.

But you got to hand it to Harry Reid and Kos–they make a solid run at Jackass each and every week.

  2. 2 Fred Says:

How come he’s not described as a maverick, an iconoclast or a dissident? Or are these labels just reserved for liberal Republicans?

Mark, I really do wish you’d quit linking to Kos. Whenever I read an article, I almost invariably click on all the links. And when I click on a link to Kos, I always have to wash my browser out with Pine-Sol and spray it down with Raid when I’m done. That’s too much like work.

Remember, it’s patriotic and courageous to dissent…

… but to dissent from that dissent is backstabbing and wrong.

Discussion boards here (in MA) are already starting up the whole “dual loyalty” thing. You know…his being a Jew and all.

  6. 6 Mark Says:

Yeah, just like the dual loyalty Hispanics have with Spain…
