The Race Is On

My Second Favorite Democrat

Earlier, I heaped the praise on Joe Lieberman…but of course, Lieberman has no chance of winning the Democratic nomination. Now, here comes one who just might have a shot, Mark Warner, also continuing his tough talk on Iraq:

“This Democrat doesn’t think we need to re-fight how we got into (the Iraq war). I think we need to focus more on how to finish it,” Warner said.

“To set an arbitrary deadline or specific date is not appropriate,” he said. “… It is incumbent on the president to set milestones for what he believes will be the conclusion.”

Warner outlined an Iraq policy during his appearance before New York’s Asia Society, and said he might run for president after his term as governor expires in January. “I clearly want to be part of the national debate,” he said.

Good on Warner…and nice to see that Lieberman is not alone…

Interesting article on Warner’s prospects in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. We’ll have to see how how much endurance he has. Of course, compared to Joe Biden the man is a juggernaut…

    Smart move by Warner.

The Democratic Party is ripe for the picking. Those at the forefront of calling for investigations into why/how somebody made them vote the way they did makes them toxic.

Clinton ripped the democratic party away from the insiders, and Warner could very well do the same. NRO makes reference to Frost expressing the belief that Pelosi may be speaker of the house soon…establishment supporting establishment…nice.

No amount of backpeddling is going to save a lot of the Democratic Party. HRC played it like a champ, but her husband ’screwed’ her with his recent statements(The ‘twofer’ is quickly becoming the ‘Thing with Two Heads’-don’t know which is Rosie Grier). She’ll show strong, but it will be Warner reminding the dems of Clinton, not Hillary.

    Bayh/warner in 08.

  3. 3 Mark Says:

Wait…are you saying Bayh/Warner like a ticket or one or the other?….

  4. 4 hrp Says:

Originally wrote both scenarios with an ‘or’ between them.(you must be psychic)

    but…
Bayh has a far more substantial resume…beyond just one term as governor. Twice as much charisma…

He has a better chance of securing his homestate, AND he is adjacent to Ohio, and it is the State that will decide 08. (As much as Florida was hyped-when Jeb won in 02, by 16 pts, it was over for 04. Ohio will remain in contest as the GOP is faced with a problem of no-confidence inspired by local dissarray, which will significantly depress turnout, unless corrected.)

Bayh is also ‘youthful’, but not in the opie taylor way of warner. Warner can talk about his four years in the governor’s Office, while Bayh will discuss his two terms as IN governor, his time in Senate, along with every major committee he has been on…(where did that no vote for Condi come from?)…

The clincher for Bayh will be when they decide to run a poll of the candiates for the nomination in Ohio. Bayh will distance himself from the field, and expressly say:

“There will be no Democratic President without Ohio. I’m the only one here who looks like they can take it.”

McCain is a juggernaut on independents, for experience…Bayh offers experience AND youth(along with his red state’s 11 votes and Ohio).

Warner just has to get 10-15% in the primaries to make it on the ticket, bayh’s ticket. He’ll have a honest chance to widdle down Clinton supporters to make it easier for Bayh and Bayh will advise him to stay in longer than reality demonstrates his viablity for the Veep spot. Bayh will not take HRC as his ‘mate’.

The early primaries will be a quagmire, better that Bayh finish strong later then to show well early, only to struggle(a small chance) in the south.

Anybody got the order of Primaries?

If Warner is sound on the war I could vote for him. If Hillary is sound on the war, I could vote for her. One or two statements does not make one sound on the war, however. Hillary has said some sensible things but in Kerryesque fashion, undercut same within a couple nanoseconds. That doesn’t even count Bill’s contradictory bloviations. When Warner has had his every utterance dissected for a few months we will know better. If the Dems could get genuinely tough on immigration while sound on the GWOT the balance of socialism between the parties could well tip the needle to the Dems for me. It’s not likely and, as a Bushie, I still have hope for my boy on borders and SSR but there is no One Party State as far as I am concerned, nor should there be.

There is not a single redeeming idiot-politician in the field of potentials.

If not outright liars, the crop of crap running at least ignores the truth out of fear of media wrath and political correctness.

Where are the heroes? Too smart to run?

[…] Mark at Decision ‘08 likes Mark Warner for his recent statements supporting the Iraq war. […]

William Thrash, they call him Da Mayor.
