Open Source Media Is History
The quickest flameout in history? Not exactly…acknowledging the bumpy start and the embarrassment of the name snafu, Open Source Media is reverting back to its original name, Pajamas Media:
At our swanky launch party in the Rainbow Room at New York’s Rockefeller Center on November 16, we changed out of our “pajamas” both literally and figuratively. We went from being www.pajamasmedia.com to OSM™ Media, LLC, the OSM being short for Open Source Media. And oh, what a drubbing we took. Many, many readers pointed out to us that OSM™ was an oxymoron; the open source tech community expressed concern; and a very fine gentleman named Christopher Lydon at Open Source (www.radioopensource.org) politely pointed out that we might be trampling on his space. (We’re sending him a pair of warm, fuzzy slippers, a heartfelt apology, and his name back, as we speak.)
All of which, as it turns out, has led us to make a change for the better. We are re-assuming our identity as Pajamas Media. (Just give us a few days to sort the technical issues out.) In short, the whole experience of being caught with our pajamas down has been a bit embarrassing, but in the end, when we realized we could get our beloved name back, we were overjoyed. So a warm, hearty thanks to all of you who expressed your displeasure with our phony identity.

I think it’s a good move…and I also think Pajamas should take advantage of this second chance and re-launch, as it were, with more content…HuffPo may be a joke, but they launched with an incredible amount of material. I may have been one of the few who liked Open Source Media, but hey, Pajamas it is (and it fits my lifestyle much better)…
UPDATE 9:36 a.m.: AJ has some harsh words over the name snafu, and some thoughts on why he thinks Pajamas will probably ultimately fail…Jeralyn Merritt at TalkLeft has some constructive suggestions:
I do think Pajamas has potential, particularly if they lose “the suits” who are advising them and get back on the creative track. Look what Arianna has done with Huffington Post. It’s the best one-stop site around with up-to-the-minute news articles and blog posts. While it began as all celebrity-written, Arianna has graciously invited several liberal bloggers to cross-post what they write on their sites on HuffPo. She links to non-celebrity bloggers. HuffPo has a great layout and graphics. It’s inviting. Not surprisingly, it’s a success.
Pajamas’ bloggers, with the exception of Marc Cooper, David Corn and Max, are conservative. Maybe they should stay truer to who they are and strive to be a conservative HuffPo. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
In any event, I admire Pajamas for admitting their mistakes and getting back on the horse. There’s room for everyone in blogtopia.
Well, I don’t share Jeralynn’s admiration for Huff’n'Puff, needless to say, but they do seem to have found a comfortable niche as a hard left echo chamber…successful, yes, apparently, but hardly a contributor to meaningful debate…I would hope that Pajamas aims higher…
I objected to the name Open Source Media because the venture (blog advertising) seemed to have little to do with ‘open source’, which is a type of software distribution and development model.
I think Pajamas Media is a better name as it shows that the venture isn’t run by a bunch of stuffy business wankers (do they use that term in Texas?).

Whoopee!!! I joined Pajamas Media, and liked the name, and was disappointed by the change in names, but I still like the concept. But I am even happier now that they have gone back to the new name.

To be absolutely clear on this subject, so many of the bloggers and writers I admire are associated with this I would hate to see it fail.
But I have been in business too long not to see some really, really bad signs. Not checking on the name, and then posting outright lies about the conflict with the rightful owner is not good. Why post Open Source Radio had given up the rights to the name when it was not true, and worse yet, no one had talked to them?
These are bush-league mistakes. I really hope it goes well for you and the others who are the heart and soul of the blogosphere. The superstar blogs are nice, but the life blood is the second and third tier blogs. Like you, and The Anchoress, etc.
AJ, thanks for the kind words…hey, feel free to criticize away, I certainly will…no doubt the venture has, shall we say, failed to ignite at this point. The bottom line for me, though, is that I’m going to keep doing the same thing I always have, with or without Pajamas Media, and of course, that includes reading and linking to fine bloggers like yourself irrespective of their opinions about this venture…
