The Grapple In The Apple
The Real Wrapup
Okay, sorry for that quick exit…I foolishly committed to liveblogging without eating supper, so I was HUNGRY! Here’s the bottom line: Hitchens laid out the case for Iraq in terms of a commitment to democracy and freedom and a stance against the jihadists and their theocratic dreams. Galloway…well, Galloway engaged in a lot of ad hominem attacks, dwelt overly long on the past statements of Hitchens, and never really answered the charges that he hobnobs with (and takes money from) dictators, because, of course, he can’t answer the charges. Galloway clearly showed himself to be an anti-Semite, anti-American, and a traitor to his own country, and if you think that’s too strong, wait until the transcript comes out (I’ll link to one when I find one), or better still, watch the debate yourself on C-Span 2 on Saturday. Hitchens clearly won the debate against the much-vaunted Galloway, despite having to overcome a partisan crowd. Thanks to Michelle Malkin, Moonbat Central, and Sister Toldjah for the links…if you’re just dropping by, the post starts at the bottom and works up to the top…and sorry for the typos, that’s the nature of liveblogging…have a great one, everybody!…
_____________
And it’s over, folks! Final thoughts: Galloway started weak, ended stronger, and the opposite for Hitchens…but Galloway blundered tremendously with his Jew-baiting and 9/11 is the fault of Americans tactic, and that was the overwhelming misstep of the evening. Give it to Hitchens…and thanks for dropping by!…

I only managed to catch the second half of the debate on podcast, but I’m very pleased to have been wrong — Hitchens definitely held his own, and more. There’s no chance at all that Galloway managed to change anyone’s mind. Hitchens just might have.
Bravo.
I got the sense that Hitchens ended on a high note with the comment about book-selling and America. Overall, I think Hitchens won easily, but not because of anything he said. He waited for Galloway to say stupid stuff and then jumped on it; the rest of the time, he was on defense, which isn’t necessarily a good strategy.
Clint, that’s a great way of looking at it…and you’re quite right. Galloway made no arguments of substance, but plenty of ad hominem attacks…while Hitchens, though not without his weak moments (New Orleans comes to mind) provided real, substantive arguments for getting on the right side of things…
Gulf Coast Bandit, indeed, one doesn’t have to wait long for Galloway to say something stupid…
Got back an hour or two ago from the debate, and a little too tired to write. It definately got pretty intense–I don’t usually get carried away, but I found myself yelling “Shame! Shame!” and “Liar!” at Galloway, and getting into a screaming match with the nice looking middle aged woman sitting next to me.
In terms of the crowd, I’d say about a third of the people came to support Hitchens, two thirds Galloway, but not all of them hardcore. Plenty of people who booed Hitchens also booed some of the stuff Galloway said, especially the bit blaming 9-11 on the US.
I’d say neither outright slaughtered the other–Galloway’s delivery gave him a slight edge, but his arguments were nonsense, and will probably appear so when read over tomorrow. I don’t think anyone’s mind was changed, but it was fun to see two Brits lay into each other that way.
Very interesting…thanks for the eyewitness account. It was very difficult with the very poor video feed I was watching to get any sense of what proportion of the crowd was supporting each combatant…but I gathered Galloway had a bit of an edge. It seemed to me, and I’d be curious to hear from someone who was there, that Galloway was a bit…well…loud!…
Christopher Hitchens: George Galloway Is Gruesome, Not Gorgeous
Now, watch me debate him.
Christopher Hitchens offers a prelude of what’s to come, and it’s gonna be a brawl. Rhetorically speaking, we hope.
But with George Galloway, y’never know. If anyone can take him to task, it’ll be Hitchens.”Gallowa…
“Iraq invaded Iran at the behest of the U.S. (and people cheer! What kind of fools…?)…”
There’s something to that, though. Let’s say we weren’t dismayed. Was it Kissinger who said it’s a shame they can’t both lose?
Boy, you were busy tonight. Call your boss tomorrow and tell him you’re taking the day off. Tell him I said it was okay.
I wish…but I am dog-tired…

Galloway Is No Match For Hitchens
Last Wednesday in New York City, Bethnal Green and Bow (UK) Respect MP George Galloway and Iraq war defender Christopher Hitchens, who is a columnist for both Vanity Fair and the Daily Mirror, went toe to toe in a debate…
[...] Oh, it’s not all bad news this week, my friends! George Galloway, pompous blowhard, friend to dictators everywhere, and receiver of illicit money from Oil-For-Food, is getting his face rubbed in it, but good. First, Christopher Hitchens destroyed him rhetorically, and now what little is left of his reputation will fly out the window if there is any justice: [...]
[...] It’s been a while since a throw-down involving the Hitch has gotten this much reaction (well, since Hitchens/Galloway, at any rate). At the RCP Blog, Tom Bevan has coined the delightful phrase “Hitch-slapped” to describe the beating administered so ruthlessly to one Juan Cole, Professor of Middle East Studies. Hitchens was interviewed today on the Hugh Hewitt show: …[S]ome of your listeners may know of Professor Cole of the University of Michigan. He is acclaimed, at least by himself, expert on matters Shiia, particularly, and he also says he’s fluent in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. And for all I know, he is. But he’s 10th rate, and he’s a sordid apologist for Islamist terrorism, and for Islamist terrorist regimes. And I’ve been on his case for a while. But he recently wrote in a blog conversation group he takes part in, that Ahmadinejead had never said that about wiping Israel off the face of the Earth, and neither had his role model, Ayatollah Khomeini. They’d never said it. It was a sort of slander. So I thought well, this isn’t going to take me very long. And I have a lot of Iranian friends who, alas for them, can’t live in their own country anymore, because of the hideous tyranny there, and who hate people who make excuses for their regime, as they should. And with their help, I was able to show very easily what I had long known, that Khomeini’s statement that Israel must be completely destroyed has been a canonical statement in Iran for a long time. Ahmadinejead was only repeating it. He probably was a bit surprised at how much attention it got, given how commonplace the thought is to him. But that it is nothing but a lie to say that this is not a statement from the Iranian theocrats, and it also suggests very strongly, which is the fun bit, that Professor Juan Cole does not know what he is talking about, in any language.
