…except this: John Roberts will be confirmed as Chief Justice. You can bet the farm, your neighbor’s farm, and all your cattle (or just a wad of cash, if you’re not a farmer). Robert Novak agrees, but sees a big fight brewing over O’Connor’s replacement (he says it will be Priscilla Owens):
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, relentlessly leading the Democratic campaign, last week tied John Roberts’s “advice” as a young aide to disparities between rich and poor that he said were revealed by Hurricane Katrina. If Kennedy goes that far on a nominee whose confirmation is not really in doubt, imagine what he might say about Priscilla Owen.
Was Kennedy the little bird that whispered in Howard Fineman’s ear and told him that Katrina would give new fuel to the opposition to Roberts? No matter…if the Democrats try to pull such a blatantly ridiculous move, and it appears they will, it will only damage them; no one is going to buy that except the Kossacks and the other progressive fanatics. The Bush comeback begins this week.

“The Bush comeback begins this week. ”
As usual, I think it is less a W comeback than the inevitable loss of steam of the leftwing attack machine, wheezing beast that she is. But on the substance, I think this is so. Katrina launched a thousand idiotic and rash accusations of which I have yet to see ONE that could concretely say, “This, Bush diddeth not but President Clinton/Gore/Kerry/Nader/Sheehan wouldst have done and X cajuns would be alive today that are not.” Gas prices coming down will remove what little popular appeal that kind of crankery holds. The Roberts hearings will, I think, reflect poorly on our Lefty Bretheren but we shall see. If it is Bush’s turn (again) it will be a riotous thing; the Lame made Whole, even if he is a duck. Oh, to see Ted Kennedy at the mics again. Oh the laughter and the love.
