Godspeed and good luck to the Shuttle astronauts, as Discovery had a successful launch today and Americans have returned to space. That’s welcome news to our good friend SEPARight, who says ‘Take that, Osama!’…Instapundit has more good news on the space front, including a response to my misgivings about the sensor problem, and a reiteration of our commitment to get to Mars…

my discontent with MSM has spread to the coverage of science now as well. i could not help but turn down the volume on the tv due to the yammering chowderheads asking/stating the most dimwitted things. i was waiting for charlie gibson to ask “which way is up?”
i turned down the volume and watched the webcast, that i am now listening to.
just for grins, one item i heard while listening to the webcast, that won’t be reported, was some tech stowed the wrong cables to connect some computer to some end device. geez.

louielouie, I missed all the coverage…but after reading that, maybe I didn’t miss it at all…

mark,
if you have about 15 minutes to kill.
try this.
go to the nasa website:
http://www.nasa.gov/returntoflight/main/index.html?skipIntro=1
click on the wb-57 chase plane video.
download and play it.
stop it at the 1:47 mark.
tell me that that thing on the side of one of the SRBs is not a bad thing.
i hope somebody that knows something about SRBs says it’s a good thing.

LL-
Watched it a couple of times. The picture gets fairly wavy around then, but I’m not sure I see what you’re concerned about.

i’m not either, and at 1:48 the camera gets really wacko.
if you look at the side of the SRB about a third of the way up there is a small glow.
that, after you see it, and go back past the 1:47 mark either way, appears and disappears.
to me it looks like the old “O” ring seal thing. even though they did away with the “O” rings.
and no i don’t have black helicopters hovering overhead.
now at least.

louielouie, I’m not really seeing it either - are you sure about the black helicopter thing? All kidding aside, I’m very nervous about this whole mission - especially with the whole debris issue…I’ll be very relieved to see the Shuttle land safely…
