Decision ‘08

The Aftermath

Peggy Noonan Won’t Be Joining

Nor, I think, will Byron York, though he makes some good points. Noonan takes the Gang of 14 to task for their blatant love of self, and that’s true enough, but really, Peggy, when has that not been the case with Senators? Nothing new there…

Please join me in saying hi to the newest coalition member, Say Uncle

Meanwhile, Stop the Neocons is wondering where the counter coalition is…

It amazes me how overwrought and heedless of reality the reactions of some conservatives have been. Noonan’s discovery of egotism in the Senate is akin to the reaction of Claud Rains–who claimed to be “Shocked! Shocked!” that gambling was happening at Rick’s Cafe Americaine, while collecting his winnings–in ‘Casablanca.’

When it comes to the role of ego in this whole business, one might just as readily argue that the fourteen Senators who forged this deal were flushing their egos in order to advance the people’s business.

It’s too bad that Frist hasn’t worked to identify himself with this deal because, quite frankly, it plays very well in the country where most Americans live, the America not given over to hyper-partisanship, where people want their government to function. To them, this deal is an example of senators doing what they were elected to do: Get things done.

I also believe, as I have stated on my blog, that the Republicans got the better of the compromise.

It would play well where most Americans live, maybe, but he’s got to worry about Iowa county committees and god knows what hoops they’ve got for him to jump through down in South Cackalacka.

I disagree, MC, about McCain’s chances being fatally compromised.
2 1/2 years (which is what we’re looking at before the campaign[s] get started - doesn’t seem *that* long, does it?) is still a long time.

Wait and see how the SC goes. If Janice Rogers Brown, e.g., is Chief Justice 30 months hence … all, or most, will be forgiven.

Knemon, although I think McCain might make a good general election candidate, I just have a hard time seeing how he could make it through the primaries - even before fili-deal…
